The Duke dos Santos Memorial Fund for Graduate Students in Chicana and Chicano Studies at the University of California Santa Barbara was established in February 2015 to honor the memory of Maria Duke dos Santos and her trailblazing work in Chicano/a literary studies. Maria’s teaching, scholarship, and commitment to her students and the profession spanned almost five decades. Well-respected in the profession and in the Dallas/Fort Worth community, where she resided for most of her professional career, she inspired countless students to further their careers in academic and non-academic areas. Her papers related to Chicano/a studies are in the California Ethnic and Multicultural Archives/Department of Special Collections in the University Library.
The Memorial Fund offers one or more grants to graduate students in the Department of Chicana/o Studies for travel expenses related to presenting a scholarly paper at a national or international conference.
